L is for Ladybug

“Why do you even call a ladybug a ladybird?” sneered Child 3 this morning. “It doesn’t look anything like a bird.”

To be honest I didn’t really feel up to the argument and let my pint-sized know-all have her say without contradiction. But between you and me and the rest of the internet, I feel the need to point out that she is wrong. And wrong on two counts. Firstly it is not a bird or a bug. It is a beetle. And in the second place there are times when it does look like a bird, because it has wings. So there. Wow. I feel so much better now.

One more thing to share about ladybirds/ladybugs though. Look at these two book covers and ponder the differences.

Is it just me, or is that a translation too far??
